Smart Campus promotes a central role of the community. Students, researchers and staff become users, designers and developers of the services they want and need. The community was involved since the very early phases of the project in the identification, design, and evaluation of those services that are more valuable to them. This led to a large participatory design exercise, the establishment of a forum,  and a number of texts, theses, and papers.
With the open source release of the platform (see here), the community can now develop and deliver services which satisfy their dynamic needs. More technically oriented people can implement working services, the others can also send suggestions, ideas and needs (see ).The goal of Smart Campus is a steady growth of the community, which will appropriate the platform and ensure its sustainability after the end of the project.
